Technology and Business is Born From Whims

I've long believed that technology and business development is born from whims -- which is why business mismanagement has become the norm, and human communication has long been a relic.
- A former manager once sent me my performance review attached to an email message.
- People sitting in side-by-side cubes will IM each other.

Technology has buffered the potential awkwardness of human-to-human communication. The "naturalness" of human communication and, as a result, collaboration is legacy and drifting closer to extinction.

Human communication need not be face-to-face -- an unreasonable expectation today. Rather, technology should first enable human communication. Technology should be designed as people-centric, rather than business-centric. I'd like to see the "technology enables business" marketing to be abandoned and replaced with "humans enable business."
